Necessary Documents to Prepare your 2022 Tax Return

  • Bring your Driver’s License or state issued ID to your tax appointment.  California and most other states request driver’s license information to be included on the return.
  • If you are claiming the Child Tax Credit or the Other Dependent Credit, you need documentation to prove the child lives with and is supported by you.  Please bring a document from the school, doctor, childcare provider, social services statement, or other to demonstrate that the dependent lives at the same address as you.
  • If you are claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit, you need to prove that the tuition, fees, and other required school expenses were paid by you.  The 1098T issued by the school has always been required.  Please also bring receipts and school transcripts.
  • If you had health insurance through Covered California you will receive two forms:  1095A and 3895, which is required in order to complete your tax return.  It is mailed to you in early January.  If you didn’t receive it, please log in to your account online to access it, or call and request another set of forms be sent to you.  All other health insurance providers will mail you a form 1095B.
  • Bring Evidence of Health Insurance in 2022 to Avoid State Penalty

PLEASE NOTE:  The "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" effective January 1st 2018 completely eliminates Job Expenses and Certain Miscellaneous Deductions (lines 21 through 27 on the Schedule A) on the federal tax return.  This includes all Unreimbursed Employee Expenses.

Even if you no longer itemize on your federal tax return, you may be able to take advantage of itemizing on the California state return.  (Please contact our office for information specific to other states.) Deductions eliminated on the federal tax return ARE still deductible on your California return.

These worksheets were designed to aid you in gathering your tax information. Please remember that they are only a guide and are not intended to be all-inclusive. You may have an income item or incurred an expense that is not listed on our worksheet. That doesn't mean it's not deductible. Just list it under "other" and we can discuss it.

Certain business professionals have deductions common to that type of business. To that end, we have put together worksheets that will help "remind" you of certain deductions. Keep it handy all year as a reminder of the type of deductions that will help you reduce your taxes.

Please find the Tax Worksheets listed below.

Tip: No matter what the occupation, if audited IRS measures most deductions by two tests - ordinary and necessary. Is the expense ordinary to your occupation and is it necessary to incur the expense in order to do your job? If it meets both tests, there is a good chance it is deductible. An ordinary expense is one which is customary in your particular line of work. A necessary expense is one which is appropriate, but not necessarily esssential in your business. The application of these terms to you relies heavily on the "facts and circumstances" of your unique situation.

Tip: If you deduct ordinary and necessary business expenses, it is essential to keep a written or digital log of your business activities and expenses. The log should include details like: the person you are meeting, reason for meeting, date and time, and number of miles driven. An accurate up to date log is an invaluable tool in the event of an IRS audit.

Tax Appointment

It's a question we get asked often....what do I bring to my tax appointment?

All tax forms you receive, information about major changes (marriage, divorce, home purchase, and adoption among others), logs and substantiation of business expenses and deductions, and the engagement letter you received with your appointment reminder. (Please note - there are 3 worksheets below.)

If this is the first time we are meeting, please also bring your most recently filed tax return.

This is a list of the most common forms but there are other forms you may receive.

Besides the tax forms you received, you need to consider all of the these things that may have happened during the year.

In order to assist us in doing the best job for you please answer these questions.
